A grand day out Gromit.
Myself and Kitty returned to her place in Sheffield late in the evening after the long drive home from West Park Asylum. We were supposed to get some shut eye and meet up with OldSkool, Host and Hidden at Meadow Hall sometime in the early AM. “Some shut eye” turned into us both sleeping in… some mad rushing, an insane drive through the streets of Sheffield and we were there. Thankfully they had all waited for us both. Dumping the Bugmobile in Meadow Hall car park we all piled into Hosts car and once again we were on the road.
I got some further shut eye squeezed against the window and was woken with excited voices saying "There it is."Opening my sleepy eyes i spotted the two huge looming head stocks of Clipstone Colliery in the shadowy morning light. Shit they looked huge.
I’d never climbed a headstock before so why not tackle what are rumoured to be the biggest in Europe.
Some comedy skulking and palisade fence breaching and we were in. Host wanted the sunrise from the top of the headstock so we started the ascent. Host, OldSkool and Hidden all raced up the rusting, creaking staircase which encases the giant structure like lightening. Kitty followed just as quickly. Myself? well to be honest i was still tired from driving and the last two days and wasn’t feeling much like a sprint to the top. I took my time and just absorbed the structure i was climbing. The steps had seen better days but the ascent was fine. Once at the top we were all rewarded with the stunning views and general epicness of the headstock and the giant pit wheels.
Once we had all had our fill of the climb we ventured inside and soaked in the early morning hazy light to poke around the winding house. This place was amazing, stripped a fair bit but truly unique to anything I’d seen before.
Pyestock and this place all within 48 hours?!! Yes to this.
A reet Grand day out for me and Kitty.
After the fun at Clipstone we all headed over to Willington Cooling towers. Five monster towers are all that remain of the once huge coal fired power station. Either i needed a rest or i had overdosed on Industry because I just sat there among the huge stacks taking it all in. The camera stayed in the bag.
Once back at Meadow hall we got out of the car and i started fumbling in my pockets for my car keys…. "huh?! Where are they then?"
That sick feeling you get when you realise something that was there has disappeared….
Yep. I’d lost my Car keys somewhere during the days adventure. The only fail of the four days.
